What is a cookie?

A cookie is a harmless text file that is stored in your browser when you visit any web page. Its usefulness is that the web is able to remember your visit when you return the same website. Not many people are aware that cookies have been around and in use for almost 20 years since the first World Wide Web browsers appeared.

What is NOT a cookie?

It is not a virus or a Trojan, a worm, a spam, a spyware, nor a popup.

What information does a cookie store?

Cookies do not usually store sensitive information about you, such as credit cards or bank account information, photographs, your ID or personal information. The data stored is technical, personal preferences and/or content web personalisation.

The web server associates your web browser, not you as a person. In fact, if you regularly navigate with Internet Explorer and try to browse the same web with Firefox or Chrome you will see that the web does not realise that you are the same person since it is in fact associating the browser, not the person.

What kinds of cookies do exist?

Technical cookies: these are the most basic kind of cookies. They allow, among other things, to distinguish between when a website user is human or an automated application, or when the person navigating is anonymous or already registered, and other things such as basic tasks for the proper running of dynamic webs.

Cookie side analysis: these collect information on the kind of navigation which is being carried out, the most used sections, consulted products, times of use, language, etc.

Advertisement based cookies: they display advertising based on navigation, your country of origin, language, etc.

What are first party and third-party cookies?

First party cookies are those generated by the page you are visiting, and third-party cookies are those generated by internal services, or external providers such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.

What happens if I disable cookies?

To understand the scope of disabling cookies, you may have a look at the following examples:

You will not be able to share contents of this site on Facebook, Twitter or any other social network.

The website will not adapt its contents to your personal preferences as it often happens with online stores.

You will not be able to access the personal area of that web, such as My Account, My Profile or My orders.

Online shopping: it will be impossible to make purchases online.  These will have to be made via telephone or by visiting the physical store if possible.

Geographic preferences as time zone, currency or language will not be customised.

The website will not be able to perform web analytics about visitors and web traffic, making it difficult for the web to be competitive.

You will not be able to write on the blog, upload pictures, post comments, evaluate or rate content. The web may not know whether you are human or an automated application that publishes spam.

No advertising will be shown, which will reduce a web advertising revenue.

All social networks use cookies. If disabled, no social network can be used.

Can cookies be deleted?

Yes, they can be deleted. Furthermore, not only can they be removed, but also blocked in a general or particular way pertaining to a specific domain.

To remove cookies from a website you should go into your browser settings and look for the cookies associated to this domain in question and proceed to its elimination.
